  4.    This book takes its name from the thirteen men raised up to deliver
  5.    Israel in the declension and disunion which followed the death of Joshua.
  6.    Through these men Jehovah continued His personal government of Israel.
  7.    The key-verse to the condition of Israel is (17.6), "Every man did that
  8.    which was right in his own eyes."  Two facts stand out--the utter failure
  9.    of Israel; the persistent grace of Jehovah.  In the choice of the Judges
  10.    is illustrated Zechariah's great word (4.6), "not by might, nor by power,
  11.    but by My Spirit, saith the Lord"; and Paul's word (1Co 1.25), "not many
  12.    wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called."

  14.    The book records seven apostasies, seven servitudes to seven heathen
  15.    nations, seven deliverances.  The spiritual parallel is found in the
  16.    history of the professing church since the Apostles, in the rise of sects
  17.    and the lost sense of the unity of the one body (1Co 12.12,13).

  19.    Judges is in two parts: I. 1.-16. inclusive; key-verse, 2.18.  II.
  20.    17.-21.; key-verse, 21.25.
